With the varied maps in Battlefield V, we go from cities to snowy mountains and deserts to devastated airfields. Each map (Panzerstorm included) has their own quirks, and each can tweak how you play based on situational circumstances specific to that map. We'll go over some of the top comments from you, our community, and have a constructive discussion on what makes a map a "bad map" and what really good maps look like.
    y1fbq89wfdj21.jpg

    Community feedback:
    • More Maps - Yep, we know the community wants more maps. Currently, Battlefield V has 9 maps (not counting the night version of Panzerstorm in Battle of Hannut). This is definitely something that's coming, with the Battle of Greece coming this March featuring Crete.
    • Night Maps - Requests for night versions of current maps are also a big topic. One thing to note when creating night maps: It's not as simple as just replacing the sun with the moon. From previous conversations in older titles, some devs have mentioned it's actually easier in some cases to create a whole new map than to "nightify" (yep, I just made that word up - you're welcome) an existing map. Shadows, light sources, etc. changing on current maps can actually be a bit more heady than creating a new map from scratch. Doesn't mean it's impossible, but that is the reality.
    • Classic maps of WW2 - We've heard the requests for D-Day maps (Normandy and such), new regions, and some reimagining of maps from BF2. We don't have anything to share just yet on our next iteration of maps at this time, but we also don't want you to think you're talking into the void. We do hear you. Stay tuned for the next roadmap that's coming out which will detail quite a bit for the next Chapters.
    • Community Maps - Something that was really awesome was the Community Map Project in Battlefield 4. Working closely with the community's feedback and testing, we created a new map based on previous maps and wholly new ideas. Definitely something we've seen as a request from within the community.

For this discussion, however, I'd like us to possibly focus on the current 9 maps in Battlefield V. I'm not expecting everyone to highlight the good and the bad of each map in their comments, but I would like to get a bit more insight from you, our community, on what maps you really like.. and WHY. That's so important. The WHY you like this map for whatever reason is key. Same with the WHY you don't like a map.

Some comments that really resonated with me in This Week in Battlefield V - February 25th Edition are:
    Kruse
I think the biggest takeaway for DICE regarding maps should be that maps are best when they capture that complete "Battlefield" feeling. Currently, Panzerstorm and Arras do a good job at this. Open areas with enough shelter for infantry to move and defend, and lots of planes, tanks and vehicles. This creates the Battlefield experience that us veteran players know and love about the franchise.

    and a counter point:
    MartinCorwin
No, absolutely not. Panzerstorm and Arras are really bad maps because they have a ton of open areas without cover and too much vehicles that can camp objectives from afar easily (looking at you, point B on Arras).
Previous installments had good maps. Like "Strike at Karkand" (BF3 edition) and Zavod 311. What makes both maps so good? They have several lines of attack between spawns (Strike at Karkand: 4-5, Zavod 311: 3-4) and a small selection of vehicles. Lines are separated by plenty of objects and elevation changes that break LOS and prevent snipers and vehicles from becoming too oppressive. This also allows good flanks, even with 3D spotting. There are a few good sniping spots that provide a good view of all lines of attack, however they are on the objectives, not around them. If you want a spot, you have to attack an objective. This is why Aerodrome is such a terrible map, it's exactly backwards there.
Devastation and especially Rotterdam are the only maps in V that come close to that ideal. Twisted Steel (exposed line of attack on the bridge) and Narvik (downhill and exposed B on bridge) make similar mistakes as Aerodrome, but it's a bit more manageable.
Something to note about this interaction: No one attacked someone else for their opinion. Their reasons are clear and concise on why they feel the way they do about the maps. If you're participating in this discussion, it's vital that we respect each other's opinions even if we disagree. Along with that, be constructive. You can say something doesn't work, you don't like it, etc. without being abusive, or using generalizations like "Maps suck." That really doesn't tell us anything, now does it?

Here's a post that discussed all the maps, good and bad, as an example of the type of feedback we're looking for:
    sac_boy
Here are some of my thoughts on the maps:

Aerodrome is unpleasant to defend on in Breakthrough. I'm sure you have your own statistics but I haven't seen many defender wins. I think largely the problem is that defenders in that first sector are forced to choose between two objectives that are overlooked by attackers, so they feel like fish in a barrel. I would like a bit more solid cover between the attacker spawn and A/B on that first sector, something that offers defenders more opportunity to get out and flank attackers and get closer to the tanks that camp on the hills.
Attackers should have to fight for that hangar in the second sector. I would pull the capture area right inside the hangar. I would also consider blowing out a corner of the big hangar to offer more opportunities to defend at medium/long range before attackers are right at their doorstep.
The final set of hangars could do with the capture area reduced to just one hangar, probably the one closest to the defender spawn. This is so attackers need to fight over one hangar rather than simply hanging back and winning by sheer numbers. I think that pair of hangars would benefit by being connected by an underground service area/basement area, to give more flanking opportunities, and an interior space to fight in safe from flying bombs.

Fjell could do with something substantial to fight over other than just snow and rock. I would like to see a medium size military installation somewhere in one of those huge blank snowy areas, set into the mountain--a complex interior for infantry to fight over. BFV has a dearth of non-destructible interior spaces. People like the variation and choice offered by having interior/exterior routes to make their way around a map. I realize of course that infantry exist to be farmed for kills by planes and tanks, but sometimes its nice to give infantry players a safe space to do their thing.

I wasn't a big Panzerstorm fan to start with but I have warmed to it. I think perhaps it could do with one less farm, one more village or something else that offers a bit of variation and solid cover for infantry. Maybe a factory with an agricultural theme. As another commenter said, more weather and day/night variation would ensure this map played out differently each time.

Arras and Devastation are probably my favourite maps in the game. What they have in common is lots of solid cover for infantry to move around, and great environments for battles. As an infantry player I don't feel like fodder for vehicles on those maps, even though both have tanks and Arras has planes. Rush on Arras has been a highlight of the game so far for me.

Visibility on Devastation is still a problem, on PS4 anyway. I honestly haven't noticed an improvement. Some areas are entirely dark, and player models are completely black. Last night I searching for a guy I knew was in an alley between A and B (Conquest), and I think we were both standing in the alley looking right at each other at one point. I shot first because I happened to see the shape of his head and shoulder. In the same game I missed a guy who was prone in a corner of the cathedral--he was a mess of grey on grey, indistinguishable from ground scatter, with a lighting/contrast level that matched the floor exactly. I think probably the problem is not really lighting but shape recognition, and the amount of customization players have available to them means it's no longer a question of learning the 4 enemy shapes per map. If DICE are committed to customization then you need another way to improve enemy visibility, and that's either spotting or an edge glow of some sort.

Hamada could do with a mine network or something else for players to move through in cover. Right now players can choose between being funneled along valleys or moving over bare flat hills--those should be high risk, high reward flanking options instead of the only choice. Maybe players would have to blast open certain paths in the mines with their own explosives. Hamada could also be **** at night--the map would feel very different if it wasn't always a searing white midday.

Rotterdam feels ripe for a couple of gunboats for the canals/waterfront. I know we have no naval units yet but if we ever do, I feel like Rotterdam could benefit from it. It would also make Breakthrough more interesting if attackers and defenders had a couple of boats to work with in that first sector. For the most part I like Rotterdam well enough, it offers a nice mix of flanking options when moving between any of the objectives.

So, let's get to it, shall we?

Hello all and welcome to the next phase in Battlefield’s New approach to Live Service. As we talked about since we revealed BFV to the world, “launch was just the beginning”.

With BFV we are taking a new approach to the series. We have removed premium and will bring all our players together on a journey as we explore new experiences, new content, new ways to play.

Now the launch of BFV did not go as smoothly as we had hoped, you were missing experiences you expected, some areas of the game were not what you anticipated from us, and our day to day transparency from Reveal to Today was inconsistent and could have been better.

We have been working hard over the last few months to fix the issues you are seeing and to add the experiences on offer. We want to move forward and kick off, towards an ever-changing live service.

The team here is very passionate about this game, and we all want to deliver beyond your expectations. So today we are going to talk a little bit about something we are calling Operation Sunrise.

    COMMUNITY BROADCASTS
As we move forward, we’ll be bringing you updates (through Community Broadcasts) on a regular cadence, covering a wide range of topics. We want to share with you what we have been working on, take you behind the curtain of the team. We also want to tackle the topics that are most important to you.

If you’d like us to talk about a specific topic, whether it’s related to content that’s on the horizon or perhaps you’ve got an interest into how we leverage heatmaps to improve the gameplay experience, then let us know. We very much want these Broadcasts to be owned by the community.
We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far with Battlefield V, but we want to keep pushing this game further and create something truly special.

The team have been discussing what is now being called Operation Sunrise, for a while. We are passionate about this game, we love our community, and we want to bring you on this epic ride. Out of this desire has grown Operation Sunrise, our ongoing commitment to your and Battlefield series as a whole.

    MORE HIGH QUALITY COMMUNICATION
Any successful relationship is built upon strong communication and we very much want this to be a two-way experience. This is vital to the ongoing health of our community and helps fuel the creative juices of our team.

When you hear the phrase “Live Service” people see evolving game experiences; new systems, new content, new ways to play. But to us, that is only one side. In order to grow in the right direction, we need active channels of communication with our players.
And this is the focus of Operation Sunrise.

We are going to bring back Dev Talks in a more refined platform. We are going to restart our Dev Twitter takeovers and we are also planning a series of Studio Live Streams to go in-depth on upcoming content and changes that we are making to the game.

When we have new content to talk about, we will talk about it AND show it.

If we’re planning to make tweaks, you’ll hear why.

When we make mistakes, or something goes wrong. We will talk about it.

Things are rarely perfect 100% of the time, but we will be here every step of the way, striving to build the best Battlefield we have ever made.

    THE FUTURE
You have been asking for what is coming next, and although we can’t release it today, or are ready to showcase it today, we can commit that you will be seeing it March, before the launch of Firestorm.

Our goal for the Roadmap is simple, we want to showcase as much as we can commit to delivering to you at a high level of quality. If we are not sure we can give you the quality you expect, we won’t show it.

We see our Roadmaps as a platform to give you an insight into what’s in store for the future of Battlefield V, while other areas of Operation Sunrise, Dev Talks, Live Streams and Twitter Takeovers will be where we go in-depth.

    MONTHLY SURVEYS
A few weeks ago we released the very first Community Survey for Battlefield and moving forward you’ll be seeing more of these. We’re currently looking to roll them out on a monthly basis but will be adjusting the frequency should we feel the need.

These surveys are a great way for us to take a temperature check with our community. When someone asks me what the current state of the community is, I can quickly fire off several key issues and give them a rundown of things. However, these surveys help provide even more context, and as such become an incredibly powerful tool in our (and your) disposal.

Topics such as communication will be a recurring mainstay of the survey and we’ll also be adding in questions each month which focus on key topics from the game; relating to game modes, maps and other gameplay elements.

    UPDATES
Updating games has been a part of gaming for many years and with Battlefield V we’re pushing ourselves even harder in order to improve and tweak your gameplay experience.

With the introduction of bi-weekly updates we’ve come a long way from the quarterly updates that were released for the likes of Battlefield 4. We’re also committed to making changes via our backend server tools. While not everything can be carried out via this method, more and more of our updates are being worked on behind the scenes.

These backend tweaks can range from ongoing server maintenance to adjusting the game itself. Just recently we made some tweaks which changed the requirements of assignments as well as stat tracking within Combined Arms.

Both of these changes came directly from community feedback and as the game continues to evolve, your feedback will be a significant driving force behind it. Please do keep it coming.

    WRAPPING UP
We’ll wrap up this Broadcast here but will return again shortly with the another. As we move forward, we’ll be keeping you more updated and more informed than ever before.

We’ll see you on the Battlefield.

This week we pushed out some back-end updates in our ongoing efforts to improve your Battlefield V experience.

This is part of our ongoing Battlefield V Quality of Life initiative to continue improving the game, fixing bugs, and adding more to Battlefield V for our community, all part of our Live Service commitment.

The three items we’ve released this week are Equip All, Mirror Loadout, and Challenge Assignments. Let’s dive in and get some details!

    Equip All
One of the big pieces of feedback we’ve received regarding customization is the way Battlefield V players customize their soldiers and weapons in their Company.

Previously, you’d have to select a skin for each part of the soldier and each part of the weapon. You’d select the skin, equip, back out, then select the next piece, repeat. To make this more efficient and improve the flow of customization for full sets, we’ve added the Equip All option.

    nwils0gqejj21.gif

How does this work? Head into the soldier or weapon customization menu and select an item you want to customize with one of your unlocked skins. From there, you will see the Equip All option. Any part of the customization set you own in your Company will now be applied to your soldier or weapon. If you don’t own the full set, it won’t grant you items not in your Company, but will apply the customization of all owned items.

    Mirror Loadout
Mirror Loadout helps make customizing each faction more efficient and quicker.
    fm288nmkejj21.png

When you customize a weapon or soldier in one faction that isn’t faction specific, you will be able to mirror the loadout to the same class in the opposite faction. Please note: It will only mirror customization parts/skins that are owned and faction-agnostic. (You can’t put an Axis outfit on an Allied soldier, for example.)

    Challenge Assignments
Challenge Assignments will grant you drops of two or three Assignments when you reach certain criteria. The Assignments you get are randomly taken from certain "pools" of predefined assignments.
There are two general types of Challenge Assignments:
    • Earn 20,000 XP - you will be granted two random assignments (1 from the "Class Challenge" pool and 1 from the "Gadget Challenge" pool)
    • Earn 15,000 XP with a specific class - you will be granted three random assignments (1 from the "Class Challenge" pool, 1 from the "Gadget Challenge" pool and 1 from the "Weapon Challenge" pool)

Each time you meet the above criteria will you continue to get more challenges. This will stop if you have all challenges available but not completed. If you complete challenges you'll start receiving them again.

Here’s a list of the Challenges and Pools:
    31equ0a0fjj21.jpg

For example: If you earn 15,000 XP while playing Assault, and 8,000 XP playing Medic, your Assignment screen will show that you have three new Assignments available to activate, because you earned enough Assault XP. You also earned over 20,000 XP in general so you will also get two additional assignments.

Hope you enjoy these three new features and we'll have more to come!
    Source

    Q&A with DICE

RM - Ryan McArthur | JB - Jeff Braddock
    • Having a rotation for Tank Conquest was great. Will that come back? Could it be permanent?
      • [RM] If there is high demand, we will bring these things back, but we won’t likely make them permanent as it bifurcates the community; we are already seeing issues with too many rotations.
      • [JB] I know one of the big reasons we don't have Premium for Battlefield V is to reduce the potential of splintering the community. Too many modes could potentially result in less full servers, impacting the gameplay experience negatively.
    • Will there be a hardcore mode? If so, when?
      • [RM] Not ETA yet, but we are definitely looking at it.
      • [JB] That's great news. Definitely one of the hot topics for our HC community.
    • Will the soldier customizations from previous ToW missions come back or ever be available for purchase?
      • [RM] Current plan of record is to not bring back cosmetic rewards for Tides of War challenges, but this may change.
      • [JB] Gotcha. So for the cosmetic rewards, get those TOW Challenges completed. By the way, really like the fact you can purchase the unlocks after the week ends in case you missed it.
    • Some folks really liked Squad Conquest. Will it make a return?
      • [RM] We will bring it back but will work with the community to create an event around when we do.
      • [JB] Great! I loved Squad Conquest, but it's that same situation of having too many modes permanently that would split the base.
    • Lots of folks have mentioned they haven’t gotten to the 4th day of a Grand Operation. Will Final Stand ever be a standalone mode?
      • [RM] Current plan is no.
      • [JB] I can see how that makes sense. Too many modes can split the playerbase, and with Firestorm on the horizon, a standalone Final Stand would potentially be competing with Firestorm.
    • The night map for Battle of Hannut is growing in popularity. Are there plans to make more night maps, understanding that it’s not as easy as just “turning off the sun”?
      • [RM] The weekly experiences team is looking at all options, so we will definitely have a look based on the reaction.
      • [JB] Right on. We've seen a lot of positivity towards the Battle of Hannut, especially the night Airborne mission, where it truly feels like you're in WW2.
    • A lot of folks have maxed out at rank 50. Are there plans for a level cap increase? If so, any ETA?
      • [RM] We are working on this as fast as we can, but no ETA yet. We are trying to lock one ASAP.
      • [JB] Sounds good. We'll keep the community informed of any progress.
