Hey BFV Community,

We've just published 'The Importance of Bullet Penetration in Battlefield V' blog. In this article, you'll learn straight from our Senior Game Designer, Rickard Antroia, as he explains how the expanded system affects gameplay.

We dive into the following topics:
  • What is bullet penetration?
  • How did we approach bullet penetration in BFV?
  • How will players experience it in-game?
  • How do different weapons and bullet types penetrate materials in different ways?
  • How has bullet penetration changed since Open Beta?
  • Dev tips on using bullet penetration to your advantage.

Let us know what you think of the system: the good, what we've nailed, your suggested improvements, what we can work on.

I was disappointed in the information provided in the Bullet Penetration post. You didn't really go into much detail on the topic of question 4) How do different weapons and bullet types penetrate materials in different ways?

    You have categories as follows:
Sidearms/Carbines - penetrate doors/thin assets like cloth, light vegetation, and glass
SMGs/Shotguns - penetrate at slightly better penetration values
    Semi-Automatic/Slug/ARs - minor deviations
Sniper Rifles - upgraded version of ARs but weaker than LMGs
LMGs - penetrate wooden walls and barricades

Vehicle HMGs and airplane 20mm cannon - penetrate through plaster/brick walls

So, what I'd like to know is whether or not all infantry weapon categories below the LMGs penetrate the same materials (doors/thin assets like cloth, light vegetation, and glass). Is the only difference between a shot from a sniper rifle and a pistol the amount of damage dealt after the bullet penetration?

Also, more information on what assets can be penetrated by a LMG would be nice. Can an LMG fire through a non-driveable automobile on the map? Can it fire through the metal siding of a train car? Will an LMG penetrate the side of a plane and strike the legs/torso of a pilot/gunner?

Last question: The end of your post says "... the best way to stay secure is to put more than one layer of cover between you and your enemies." So, does each layer of cover add to the reduction in damage dealt per shot? Is there a limit to number of layers (sand bags for example) that a LMG can penetrate?

Solid questions. Adding these to our weekly debrief to run answers with our devs.

    Will bullets ricochet?

That's not currently a system that exists in Battlefield V. However, holy shazbot... can you imagine if you could ricochet a panzerfaust round ever so slightly off of a car hood up into a window? Style points.

I always have at least 3 layers of squadmates in front of me at any given time. I should be fine.
